Story of Construction:
Once upon a time before Mughal ruled the town, there was settlement of group of people in seclusion to learn about the brahmacharya. During this time scores of boys lived in hermitages. The Chandela monarchs constructed these monuments between the period of 950 to 1150AD as soon as the Tantric tradition has been acknowledged. The main purpose of constructing such structural buildings with erotic sculptures on the walls of temples is to learn about the worldly desires before they became men by examine such sculptures.

Ancient name of Khajuraho is Kharjuravahaka which is derived from the Sanskrit words Khajuraho – meant date palm and vahaka – meant one who carries.
During 10^th to 12^th Centuries, the town was ruled by Chandel Rajputs and built all these majestic monuments. After this period, the capital of Chandel moved to Mahoba. But the buildings constructed by them still flourish with its original charm in the region.

According to the location of places of worship, the complex is divided into three zones namely WESTERN, EASTERN AND SOUTHERN.
